How many of us juggle a job while attending school? I know I do—my hand is raised high! I work almost every day of the week, with Tuesday being my only consistent day off (though even that’s not guaranteed). As a senior, I’ve found that balancing work and school can be challenging, especially when trying to maintain good grades.
This past semester, I struggled to find that balance, and I’ll admit my grades might be higher if I didn’t work so much. Still, I’m proud that most of my class averages are in the high 80s.
Curious about others’ experiences, we asked students between classes if they also worked. The majority said yes, and many shared that they face similar struggles managing both responsibilities. “It’s hard to keep up with assignments after a late shift,” one Senior said. “Sometimes I feel like I’m just trying to survive the week.”
Some students rely on tutoring to stay on top of their schoolwork. A few mentioned they would quit their job if the workload became too overwhelming, choosing to prioritize school. “I don’t want my grades to suffer,” a junior explained. “If it gets too much, I know I’ll have to step back.”
However, not everyone has that option. For some students, their job is essential for paying bills or supporting their families. “I help cover rent at home,” another Senior shared. “Quitting isn’t an option for me—I just have to find a way to make it work.”
As for me, quitting isn’t a luxury I can afford—but I’ve learned that it’s possible to handle both commitments. It’s not always easy, but as they say: you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do!
